Cast Drawing
The drawing of antique sculpture has been a
training method since the Renaissance. Working from the cast develops
one's ability to see and render accurately the basic elements of proportion,
form, and tone. Through the discipline of copying classical sculpture, the
student endeavors to learn how to see proportions correctly and to model the
effects of light and shadow. In the first session students will complete a
5-10 Bargue drawings and 5-10 Master Copies as assigned by the instructor.
The student will then complete a small cast drawing. In the second
session, intermediate students will complete a finished study of a cast as
assigned by the instructor. In the final session students complete a
finished portrait cast. Work will be evaluating in terms of correctness of
proportion, tonality, and chiaroscuro. The goal is a perfectly copied
three-dimensional cast on a two-dimensional plane. Each student's
individual progression is evaluated by the instructor.
