Summer Intensive Courses at the Fine Arts League

            Botanical Drawing – Peter Loewer
                        Dates: July 14-18 (note date change)
                        Schedule: 10 –2pm

Learn about the intricacies of a flower or capture the delicate essence of a fern frond while you tune your powers of observation, and learn how to really "see." We will draw (and possibly write), observations in a diary or sketch book and you'll learn more than any camera ever taught. Using the local landscape for inspiration, students will draw flowers, leaves, even mosses and lichens. The class is appropriate for the beginning student in addition to the accomplished artist. Scratchboard techniques and linocuts included.



 

Bar Relief – Lothar Jobczyk
            Dates: July 14-18
            Schedule: Mon-Fri, 9-2pm

Students will work on slate rock, carving their own bar relief composition.  They will learn about the history of the art form as well as its various tools for beginning and finishing the piece. Class will take students from design and creating your own sketch for your work to understanding and practicing with tools. After this introduction students will carve their own project.

 

 

Etching - Michael Smith
            Dates: July 14 - 18

This course will incorporate traditional techniques and materials to produce copper and zinc plate etchings and drypoint etchings. We will look at examples of etching from a historical prospective. Students will learn procedures to prepare plates such as burnishing and polishing.By week's end, students will learn how to work with etching plates (zinc etch), inking plates (copper etch),  printing plates (use of etching papers and use of press) and the re-working of plates.

 

 

Artistic Anatomy – Roger Nelson
            Dates: July 21-25

This week long class will meet twice a day, each session pairing a 1 hour lecture on human anatomy with 2.5 hours of drawing from a live model.  Students will learn about different parts of the body and their proportional relationships to each other.  Students will learn how to draw in various media and under different time constraints, ranging from 1 to 20 minutes.

During this workshop students will be exposed to the curriculum at the Fine Arts League for training classical realists. Students will work on anatomy and figure drawing, portraiture, making ink and a reed pen and using them for landscape drawing, as well as sizing and toning paper. They will also gain insight into the work it takes to become a professional artist.  This experience will introduce art students to possibilities for their own work as well as help them make decisions about their artistic futures.  Recommended for Middle and High School Students.



 


            Handmade Sketchbook – Annie Fain Liden

This class will make sturdy, hand-bound sketchbooks ideal for landscape artists working out of doors, the adventurous traveler or the home studio artist.  Students will be introduced to making two book structures from scratch: 1) a non-adhesive, soft leather long-stitch book structure and 2) the incredibly durable and ancient, hardcover Coptic binding.  While mastering these two bindings, students will learn to consider their particular needs as an artist in the field and learn to incorporate those needs into the structure of the book.



 

 

            Stone Carving – Lothar Jobczyk

This is a two week course where students will work with Soapstone to carve in three-dimensions.  They will learn about the history of various stone media and the tools used to work and refine them.  Three dimension composition and design issues will be emphasized as student develop and finish their piece.




 

            Portrait - Nathan Bertling
                      Dates: July 28 – Aug 1

Over the course of five days, students will be instructed in drawing the portrait from life. The instructor will guide the class in keeping with the seven core principals of the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas : Form, Simplicity, Proportion, Restraint, Discipline, Patience, and Will. Particular attention will be given to the process of building a portrait drawing from start to finish. The instructor will present key principals each day through lecture and discussion. Just as importantly the instructor will illustrate the artistic process by drawing a portrait alongside the students, thereby modeling the approach. Each student will be offered assistance through personalized critique and instruction.
